Wellfleet, originally known as Billingsgate of Eastham but since incorporated and named a lingual adaptation of "whale fleet", is unique of all the Cape towns. It is only two miles wide! It connects Truro and Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod to the rest of the body at Eastham. Small spring-fed ponds called kettle holes sprinkle Wellfleet's surface as a reminder of this area’s ancient interaction with glaciers.
Known as the arts and oysters center of the Cape, Wellfleet's numerous galleries feature fine arts and crafts for every hobby or niche trade. Nine beaches border the east and west sides of the town, including part of the Cape Cod National Seashore on the Atlantic side, so obviously both the natural terrestrial and marine beauty play a huge part in Wellfleet's arts and attractions. Yachts, trawlers, and fishing boats contribute to the daily clamor at Wellfleet Harbor until low tide, when it's time for shellfish.
Chequessett Country Club is Wellfleet's answer to golfers. CCC is a par-35 course spreading over 2,500 yards for 9 holes. Many other courses are located nearby in neighboring towns, such as the Highland Links Course in North Truro or the Starboard Course in Brewster.
Such a strong culture and personality is remarkable considering Wellfleet's less than 3,000 annual population. Aside from the rich artistic society, Wellfleet attractions also include the Historical Society Museum. Like many Cape towns, Wellfleet has been around since the birth of America and encourages tourists and residents to learn about its participation in that early period. Memberships are available to everyone for a tiny fee and daily visits are even more affordable, so that anyone interested has the opportunity to view the museum's exhibits, artifacts, and other historical items. Those with a penchant for history should also make time for the Samuel Rider House, a farmhouse from the mid-1700s. Birdwatchers will love the Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary's 1,100 acres of habitat for a wide array of birds and other wildlife. Walk the nature trail, participate in one of the many educational programs, or enjoy a hands-on experience with a family-oriented Marine Life Cruise. Wellfleet's got something for everyone!
