Barnstable, Cape Cod, Massachusetts

The town of Barnstable is often referred to as Hyannis, which is actually one of the villages within Barnstable. But because of its size and incredibly famous residents, no one really cares. That would be the Kennedy's, by the way. Barnstable (pop. 39,973) includes Hyannis, Hyannisport, Osterville, Centerville, Craigville, Cotuit, Marstons Mills, and West Barnstable. It is the largest of cape towns. Vacation rentals are available as both private home and condominiums. A Hyannis condo vacation rental might cost between $650 and $3,250 per week while a home rental can vary from $200 a night to $3,400 per week. The Kennedy's don't have any rooms available, so don't ask. Don't leave Hyannis without visiting the John F. Kennedy Museum and the JFK Memorial. Once you have taken in these important and awe-inspiring attractions, make some time for a round of golf or a ride on the Cape Cod Scenic Railroad. There is also the Harbor Walk to stroll down, and the Kalmus Park and Sound Beaches.

Hyannis Harbor is the place to be, with ferries to the islands plus fishing and sailing charters dotting the water and providing either a perfect backdrop for a lazy stroll, or an activity filled day on the water. It is also home to the Kennedy Monument. Main Street offers shops, restaurants and a a few nightclubs for your evening revelry. Hyannis Port is a quiet residential area, and home to the Kennedy Compound. Don't forget the camera. If you aren't of the age to spend your whole vacation landlocked, Craigville Beach in Centerville has a younger vibe. There are plenty of other beaches in the area that offer fresh and salt water experiences of their own. Daff O'Ville Days are held every April in Osterville. This village-wide celebration includes such events as fashion shows, plant clinics, children's events and antique car shows. In May the annual Figawi Sailboat race is held. This is the largest sailboat race on the East Coast and attracts over 200 sailboats. The race is from Hyannis to Nantucket and back and is held on Memorial Day Weekend. The town of Barnstable is much more rustic compared to Hyannis. Antique stores and historic inns line Route 6A here. It is also home to Sandy Neck Beach and Barnstable Harbor on the Cape Cod Bay. For a calm, quiet and quaint atmosphere, Barnstable is a great place to rent your Cape Cod vacation home and still be close to all the action.
